Introduction
A clogged gutter drain is one of those problems that starts small and gets expensive fast. You notice a drip during rainfall. Then a stain on the wall. Before long, water is pouring over the edge of your gutter and pooling around your foundation.
The good news? Many blockages can be cleared without calling anyone. This guide shows you how to unclog a gutter drain safely, what tools you need, and when the job is better left to a professional.
Signs Your Gutter Drain Is Blocked
Catch the problem early and you save yourself a lot of hassle. Watch out for these warning signs:
- Water spilling over the sides of your gutters during rain
- A constant dripping sound from the downpipe even when it is dry
- Sagging or pulling away of the gutter from the fascia
- Water stains or damp patches on exterior walls
- Plants or grass growing out of the gutter
- The bottom of the downpipe is dry during heavy rain
What Causes Gutter Drains to Clog?
Living in North East Scotland, our gutters deal with a unique mix of weather and nature. The main culprits are autumn leaves blown in from nearby trees, moss that washes down from the roof, broken tiles and mortar dropped by ageing roofs, and tennis balls, bird nests and other surprises.
The downpipe itself often traps debris at the bend just below the gutter outlet. This is the narrowest point in the whole system and the first place a blockage forms.
Tools You Will Need
- Sturdy ladder with stabiliser
- Gloves and eye protection
- Gutter scoop or small trowel
- Drain rods or a long flexible brush
- Garden hose with spray nozzle
- Bucket and tarp
- Plumber’s snake or wire coat hanger (for stubborn clogs)
Step-by-Step Guide to Unclogging
Step 1: Clear the Gutter Above
Start at the top. Remove all visible debris from the gutter section directly above the blocked downpipe. If the gutter itself is full, water cannot reach the drain even once it is clear.
Step 2: Check the Downpipe Opening
Look into the top of the downpipe. Often you will see a clump of leaves or moss right at the opening. Pull it out by hand if you can reach it. A gutter scoop helps here.
Step 3: Use a Hose from the Top
Feed a garden hose into the downpipe opening and turn the water on full. In many cases, the pressure alone dislodges the blockage and pushes it through. Have someone at the bottom check that water is flowing out of the drain.
Step 4: Use Drain Rods from Below
If the hose does not work, feed drain rods up from the bottom of the downpipe. Attach a plunger or brush head and work it up and down. Twist clockwise as you push. Never twist anticlockwise or the rods may unscrew and get stuck.
Step 5: The Plumber’s Snake
For compacted blockages, a drain snake is your best friend. Feed it into the pipe until you feel resistance, then rotate the handle to break up the clog. Pull it out slowly and remove any debris attached.
Step 6: Flush and Test
Once water flows freely, flush the entire system with the hose. Check both the top and bottom of the downpipe. The water should run clear and drain away quickly without backing up.
Safety First
Working at height is dangerous. Never overreach from a ladder. Keep three points of contact at all times. Have someone foot the ladder. And if your gutters are higher than you are comfortable with, stop and call a professional.
Our team cleans gutters on properties up to four storeys using a SkyVac system. We can often clear a blocked downpipe from the ground. It is safer, faster and you get before-and-after photos to prove the job is done. Read our full guide on ++how to unblock an outside gutter drain++ for more detail on ground-level techniques.
Preventing Future Blockages
Once your drain is clear, keep it that way. Clean your gutters at least once a year. Twice if you have overhanging trees. Consider fitting gutter guards to reduce how much debris gets in. And check your gutters after heavy storms.
When to Call a Professional
If you have tried the steps above and water still is not flowing, the blockage may be deep in the underground drainage. If the downpipe is damaged or disconnected, rods will not fix it. And if you simply do not feel safe on a ladder, it is not worth the risk.
